A Title and "Trademark"

Pol Roger Non-Vintage has long been instantly recognisable not only for the classic script of the label, but for the distinctive white foil closure which forms its 'Trademark; hence the popular sobriquet 'White Foil'.

The style is versatile, suited to most 'Champagne occasions'. White Foil can be enjoyed as an aperitif, as a complement to a meal, or at any time as the elixir of celebration.

James Halliday's Top 100

95 Points

One of my favourite champagne houses. This entry point has one-third each of pinot noir, pinot meunier and chardonnay from 30 crus, 25% reserve wines, spending 4 years on tirage. It has a flowery bouquet, terrific mouthfeel thanks to a hint of honey, and Meyer lemon cleansing the finish and aftertaste.

Winery Tasting Notes

Cuveé

The definitive house-style, composed from 30 still base wines drawn from at least two vintages, and the three varieties of Champagne, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Pinot Meunier blended in equal portions.

Pinot Noir contributes body, depth of character and life extending tannins; Chardonnay provides lightness, elegance and finesse; Pinot Meunier provides youthfulness and vigour and plump fruit character.

Aroma

On the nose, the champagne is dominated by white flowers, green apple, brioche and a trace of minerality.

Palate

On the palate there are notes of stone fruits, a certain nuttiness and a hint of honey supporting the freshness of the acidity.

Food Matching

The aperitif champagne par excellence but one which has sufficient backbone to be drunk with fish and even spicy dishes.

Winery Profile

Founded by Pol Roger in 1849 and succeeded by his sons, Maurice and Georges. Now into the fourth generation with Christian Pol Roger and Cristian de Billy at the helm the house now owns around 85 hectares, mostly around Epernay including Grand Crus Cramant, Chouilly and Avize on the Cotes de Blancs and Ambonnay, Bouzy & Verzy on the Montagne de Reims. Generally Pinot dominant, the range of wines from the Non-Vintage cuvées through to the stellar Cuvée Sir Winston Churchill show consistency of house style and a pedigree that is the envy of many other grand marques.

Pol is great shape at the minute, with impressive freshness and that all-round style that seems to nail broad appeal without losing complexity and class. Drawing on Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier, this has a complex toasty overlay across red berries and citrus fruits. In the mouth, it's fine yet bold, with plenty of ripe red-fruit flavour, finishing crisp and tidy.Rating 93 & 2 Glasses - Nick Stock, Good Wine Guide 2011

"Delicate but with drive, this is a miasma of flowers, red fruit and lime. Lovely weight and texture, precise balance and a rich but fresh feel"Highly Recommended - Decanter Magazine (Dec/2009)

The base vintage here is 2005, the blend the usual one-third each of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and 10% Pinot Meunier, and the dosage 10 g/l. A very pale hue in the glass, fresh and crisp and feminine in style, followed by a rather rich and fleshy style on the palate. Quite accessible at present, more so than expected from that crispy-fruit nose, with a broad and fresh presence of fruit here, highlighted by a beautiful floral character. Very fine. Rating 17+/20 - Chris Kissack, Wine Doctor (Mar/2010)

Quite nutty and evolved, with sweaty/toasty/cheesy aromas and a very yeasty palate with solid flavours and green apple-like acidity.4 Stars - Winestate Magazine (Nov/Dec 2010)
